Cardboard boat – Dyson Challenge Card prototype

Brief: create a boat made of cardboard. It has to balance on water without sinking (or hold 250g – wasn’t able to do this)

My first design was just a simple boat to see what shapes would float and what might not. My design for my actual boat has many supports and ways to balance it:

I then proceeded to creating my first prototype with card board and glue, and then covered the bottom with foil. The foil prevents the carboard from getting wet and then the project failing. I drew on a pice of carbopard and used a knife to cut the shapes and lines.

The finishes product was a simple and small boat, the managed to float. However, this might not have worked with a larger boat, so I did some more research and remebered that att he bottom of the boat there is somethng called the centerboard, or also referred to as a ‘keel’. This helps balance the boat and will prevent tipping. This will be especially useful for bigger and heavier boat.

After my first test, I then added a ‘double keel’ which is two on ech side facinbg outwards. It hought this was better for balance since it will stay more stable on two edges of the boat, rather than the center.
